High Oredish

A gritstone ridge on the western side of Brackenfield known as High Oredish gives fine views over to Ashover and beyond. The slopes are covered in bilberries, heather and gorse. On very clear days Hardwick Hall, Bolsover Castle and Chesterfield can be seen. Sightings of the Humber Bridge, over 50 miles away, have been claimed.

Today, a car park and picnic tables cater to visitors, but outings to this heather-clad beauty spot were evidently made as far back as Victorian days. An Alfreton newspaper of the era records a church picnic there at the turn of the century.
